Additional Notes: The Smith & Wesson Model 1899, commonly known as the “Military & Police,” was also produced for the U.S. Navy in .38 Long Colt chambering. Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, this double-action revolver served as the standard issue sidearm for the U.S. Navy during the Philippine-American War and the early stages of World War I. Featuring a six-round cylinder, the 1899 US Navy model incorporated the swing-out cylinder design, which was a significant advancement in firearm technology at the time. While the .38 Long Colt cartridge was eventually replaced by the .45 ACP due to performance concerns, the Smith & Wesson Model 1899 US Navy played a role in the transitional period of military sidearms. It holds historical significance as a part of the U.S. Navy’s armament during this era.
